One of the most recognised names and best-loved performers in UK folk music, Kathryn Tickell makes a welcome return to Sale with her quartet, The Side.
Kathryn is the foremost exponent of the Northumbrian smallpipes and an accomplished fiddler. Alongside her are Amy Thatcher (accordion), Louise Tuck (cello), and Ruth Wall (harp). This folk-classical quartet has now been together for four years, during which time they have refined their collaboration and performed at venues and festivals across the UK. The music leans more towards Kathryn’s roots in the traditional music of Northumberland, but in 2015 they were invited to perform at European classical concert halls, including the Berliner Philharmoniker.
Kathryn’s music is both inspired by and deeply evocative of the people, landscapes and environment of her native Northumberland. Playing with The Side, she mesmerises on pipes and fiddle, her rapid-fire playing contrasting with the richness of the cello and the ripple of the harp. The result is a deeply satisfying sound, both rewarding and uplifting.
This is a seated event which takes place in The Robert Bolt Theatre.
